    Extractions: Greek astronomer Aristarchus 310-230 BC, was the first to maintain the earth rotated around the sun and that the earth revolved on its axis once every 24 hours. It was dismissed at the time, but centuries later would be proved correct. Also Greek astronomer Ptolemy theory that the universe revolved around the Earth was in use for 1300 years. Disposing of this theory was Polish astronomer Copernicus who assigned the Sun as centre and the planets revolved around it.

    Extractions: The astronomical tradition at Case Western Reserve University, then Case School of Applied Science, had its beginning before the foundation of the college itself, when its founder, Leonard Case, Jr., met John Stockwell, a self-educated astronomer. The two collaborated in a number of theoretical investigations concerning the motion of the moon. When the college was organized shortly after the death of Leonard Case, John Stockwell became its first Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy. Research and instruction in astronomy began in the year 1881. About that time, two astronomical enthusiasts, Worcester R. Warner and Ambrose Swasey, moved their machine tool firm to Cleveland and began their distinguished careers in the manufacture of precision instruments and large telescopes. Worcester R. Warner and Ambrose Swasey They took a great interest in Case School of Applied Science; and when, after some years, they became trustees of the college, it was natural for them to take an interest in improving the astronomical equipment of the college. They encouraged Charles S. Howe, the second professor of astronomy and later president, in his work on the determination of fundamental star positions with the almuncantar. So interested were these two men in the study of the stars that they built and housed a 9.5 inch refracting telescope in a small observatory between their adjoining residences in Cleveland.

    Extractions: Advanced Search History of Astronomy at the University of Mississippi Barnard Observatory Frederick Augustus Porter Barnard . was the University's first "chancellor" (the title was changed from "president" in 1858). In 1856, shortly after his elevation to the presidency, Barnard, the former Chair of Physics and Astronomy convinced the Legislature to appropriate funds to order the largest telescope in the world for the University and to construct an observatory for it on campus. The Department of Physics and Astronomy has occupied Barnard Observatory since its completion in 1859. The large telescope that Barnard had dreamed of was ordered from Alvin Clark & Sons. In January, 1862, when Alvin Clark was testing the telescope he discovered Sirius B, the "white dwarf" companion of Sirius the "dog star". However, due to the outbreak of the Civil War, it was never delivered to the University of Mississippi. Barnard's telescope was subsequently purchased by the Chicago Astronomical Society in 1863, and was given in trust to Northwest University in 1887. That telescope, together with Barnard's collection of physics instruments, would have allowed the University of Mississippi to become the foremost institution in America for the study of physics and astronomy. One of only three remaining antebellum buildings on campus

Early civilizations, for example, Harappans, Mayans, and ancient Chinese used astronomy to keep track of time, orient their cities, and to try to predict the future. Early astronomy was a mix of careful observation of the positions and motions of the heavenly bodies, religion, and astrology. The real renaissance of astronomy began with Nicholaus Copernicus, who advanced the idea that the Sun is in the center of the Solar System. Armed with the excellent naked-eye observations of Tycho Brahe, Johannes Kepler formulated his Three Laws of Planetary Motion, which, for the first time, correctly described the way the planets move through the Solar System. Galileo Galilei was the first person to use a telescope to look at celestial bodies (though he did not invent the telescope) and discovered the four brightest moons of Jupiter, proving that there are things in the Solar System that don't revolve around the Sun.
