Best known for his affiliation to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, the sculptor wasn't tempted to become a photographer, but instead used photographs to promote his art. It's worth emphasizing the modernity of Woolner's approach to publicity: during the 1850s, most of his contemporaries used etchings and woodcuts to do the job. An exhibition at the Henry Moore Institute puts some of these commissioned photographs alongside examples of Woolner's work, focusing on his idealised figure of Love and a bust of the Victorian icon Lord Alfred Tennyson. The photographs are the fruits of the artist's association with the London Stereographic Company. Woolner was celebrated for his portrait busts in the 19th century, but he has since been overlooked. This show should help rectify that.
