Herkomer studied at Southampton School of Art, the Munich Academy and the South Kensington Art School, where like his fellow student Luke Fildes , he was influenced by the work of Frederick Walker Herkomer left Kensington Art School and 1867 and started a career as a book and magazine illustrator. Herkomer found most of the work fairly boring but as a young man with radical political opinions he was excited by the news that the social reformer, William Luson Thomas , planned to publish an illustrated weekly magazine called the Graphic magazine. He made a name for himself with his patriotic painting, The Last MusterSunday at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea. Afterwards, he became a sought-after portrait painter. Today, his most recognized works are his paintings with social messages that at one time were unique in English art. Herkomer also composed operas, designed the sets, and performed. From 1883 to 1904, he was the head of an art school in Bushey and he also wrote several books including the autobiographical work, My School and My Gospel in 1908.

He lived for some time at Southampton and in the school of art there began his art training; but in 1866 he entered upon a more serious course of study at the South Kensington Schools, and in 1869 exhibited for the first time at the Royal Academy . By his picture, "The Last Muster ," at the Academy in 1875, he definitely established his position as an artist of high distinction. He was elected an associate of the Academy in 1879, and academician in 1890; an associate of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours in 1893, and a full member in 1894; and in 1885 he was appointed Slade professor at Oxford . He exhibited a very large number of memorable portraits, figure subjects and landscapes, in oil and water colour; he achieved marked success as a worker in enamel , as an etcher, mezzotint engraver and illustrative draughtsman; and he exercised wide influence upon art education by means of the Herkomer School (Incorporated), at Bushey, which he founded in 1883 and directed gratuitously until '904 ,when he retired. Extractions: Hubert Herkomer was born in Bavaria. His father, a wood-carver emigrated to Southampton when Hubert was a child. He attended the South Kensington Schools from 1866, and studied under Luke Fildes. Herkomer produced engravings for the Graphic magazine, early in his career. He worked in a variety of areas, particularly social realism, including the famous paintings On Strike, and Hard Times, illustrating the inhumanity shown towards employees by both farmers and industrial employers at that time. Herkomer was a very successful, and versatile individual. He produced many portraits, some of them of male sitters being a little short of inspiration and flair. In truth this was less his fault than the requirements of the sitters to look sombre, serious, and dignified. He became ARA in 1879, and a full Academician in 1890. In 1899 Herkomer was en-nobled by Kaiser Wilhelm 11 (1859-1941), becoming a von, which he always added to his name thereafter. He was knighted in 1908. He built a grandiose Victorian house in Bushey, Hertfordshire, named Lululand, after his second wife who was killed rescuing a child from a road accident. At Lululand, Herkomer had his own theatre, where he produced plays, and his own operas.

Hubert von Herkomer Hubert von Herkomer was born in Bavaria, came to England in 1857, and studied art at the RCA from 1866, under the direction of Sir Luke Fildes . Herkomer first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1869, his famous The Last Muster was one of the pictures of the year in 1875, and he became successively RI (1871), ARA (1879) and RA in 1890. He was influenced in watercolour painting by the painter J. W. North, and after spending some months painting in his company, became RWS. (In 1897, he was narrowly beaten for the Presidency of the Royal Watercolour Society by E. A. Waterlow Herkomer founded a school of art at Bushey, Hertfordshire, directing it personally from its foundation in 1883 through to 1904. He had very strong ideas on the proper way to teach art, using a scheme of progressive study, centred around study from life. First the students would study casts from life, then they would enter the life room, and only afterwards could they work from the antique. (This was the reverse of the system used in the Royal Academy Schools and South Kensington, where students started with the antique and ended with the life class.) The idea was that the students would develop their own character as artists, and then use the antique as examples of the ideal figure, rather than slavishly copy what they saw. The School was very successful, and students there included
