    Extractions: Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641) was born in Antwerp, Flanders to a prosperous fabric merchant and his second wife. He developed his skill as a painter at a very young age, and by nineteen he was admitted into the painter's guild of Antwerp as a master. Shortly after, he began working in the studio of Peter Paul Rubens, who by this time had great fame throughout Flanders and much of Europe. By 1620, Van Dyck had become senior assistant to Rubens. Van Dyck was introduced to both etching and engraving by Rubens, who used printmaking extensively and trained engravers for his own use. He developed a strong reputation as a painter while working under Rubens, becoming well-known for his history, religious, and portrait paintings. Due in part to his great skill as a portraitist, he became an important court painter to King James I of England, who was a source of many painting commissions for Van Dyck. Like most of the portraits in Van Dyck's Iconography, "Jacobus De Breuck" is an engraving rather than an etching (ninety-nine of them are engravings, and fifteen are etchings). Instead of the more quick, spontaneous method associated with etching, engravings are produced through an exacting process, which requires the skill of a trained engraver. In preparing the series, Van Dyck created meticulous drawings and oil sketches as guides and then sent them to a professional engraver to execute the actual plates, which were then printed and marketed by publishers. "Jacobus De Breuck" was engraved by Paulus Pontius, who was one of the most renowned engravers in Antwerp at this time, and who was also employed by Rubens. The deliberate and intensive process of engraving is mirrored in the precise, formal, and controlled quality of "Jacobus De Breuck."

    Extractions: Apart from Rubens, Sir Anthony van Dyck was the most important Flemish painter of the 17th Century. After a brief apprenticeship with van Balen, he became a member of the Antwerp painter's guild and in 1618 came under the tutorship of Ruben's himself working as the great master's assistant. Ruben's influence was powerful. Van Dyck's work gained a fluency and grace which was conferred on every subject. Though van Dyck also painted religious scenes and landscapes and began a series of etchings of famous contemporaries, it is for his portrait painting that his immortality has been assured. Indeed he will be remembered as one of the geartest portrait painters ever. English portrait artists especially were enriched by van Dyck's incomparable skill for painting materials and the elegance and refinement conveyed upon his sitters. His influence in portrait painting can be traced through to Sargent (1856-1925).

This great painter was the seventh child of a family of twelve, being the son of Frans Van Dyck, merchant in silk, linen, and kindred materials, and of Maria, daughter of Dirk Cuypers and Catherina Conincx. While still a boy he was placed, on the advice of Jan Brueghel, as a pupil in the studio of Hendrick Van Balen, who had been a pupil of Rubens . The young artist's development as a painter was rapid, for it is recorded that at the age of fourteen he painted a portrait of an old man, and a lawsuit in 1660 revealed the fact that he had also produced when quite a youth a series of heads exceedingly well painted . A proof of his skill is the fact that in 1618, before he was twenty, he was admitted to the freedom of the guild of St. Luke in Antwerp , an unusual distinction for a youthful painter . At 20 he was living in the house of the Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens and was completely under his influence. He painted not only in the same style as Rubens but also often the same subjects, possibly as a collaborator. Then followed extended periods of work in both Italy (where he was influenced by the works of Titian) and Antwerp developing his own style and building his reputation painting both portraits and religious subjects. In 1632 he was invited to the English court, where the king knighted him, gave him a house in London and a pension. Charles I and his queen were the painter's first sitters. Soon the lords and ladies of the court were demanding portraits. So popular did the artist become that he set up a large studio like Rubens'. Assistants blocked in the paintings on the required scale from Van Dyck's small sketches. Then, in a few hours, Van Dyck completed the works.

Artists Van Dyck In the genre of court paintings, the name of Sir Anthony van Dyck demands attention. A Flemish painter, van Dyck perfected his art to become one of the most acclaimed portrait artists of all time. Van Dyck was born in Antwerp on the 22nd of March 1599. Here at a fairly young age, he became an apprentice to the Baroque artist, Hendrik van Balen. He also assisted Rubens for two years. Van Dyck learned a lot from both these painters and their influence is noticeable in his work. Though his paintings bear sighs of these painters, it must be remembered that Van Dyck did not emulate them. Rather, he developed his own style from what he had learned. Van Dyck’s style, for instance, is not as energetic as Rubens. In 1621, Anton Van Dyck went to Italy. Here he stayed for six years, studying the great Italian painters, and refining his own style. He toned down his former robustness, and his work began to acquire a certain grace and elegance. Van Dyck was on his way to becoming one of the world’s greatest portrait painters.
