He was later elected dean of the guild. While serving as the dean he decorated the town of Ghent in celebration of the marriage between Charles the Bold and Margaret York, a move that would later earn him employment from the couple. Suffering from a mental illness caused by his relationship with Elizabeth Wijtens, a sister of the Order of the Our Lady of the Rose of Jericho in Brussels who had served as his model for a now-lost fresco of The Meeting of David and Abigail, he retired to the Red Cloister near Brussels around 1478 in the hopes that living in the monastery would help him overcome his depression. He was considered a lay member of the cloister. Van der Goes attempted suicide in 1480, and died two years later. His most famous work is the Portinari Triptych (c. 1475, Uffizi, Florence), an altarpiece commissioned for the church of the hospital of Santa Maria Nuova in Florence by Tommaso Portinari, the representative of the Medici family in Bruges. However, other works include Lamentations and The Fall of Man

Extractions: What spawned the Renaissance in the west? Was it the Crusaders who brought back to the west books and knowledge of the eastern world? Was it pilgrims to the Holy Land who brought back tales of distant lands, customs and arts? Was it the opening of trade routes? Perhaps it was all of the above and more. Perhaps it was a thirst for knowledge in geographic areas so long cut off from learning, a desire for beautiful objects no longer thought 'sinful,' a need for economic growth now that growth was possible. About painting, one thing is clear from the beginning. The painting style that erupts so quickly in the west was brought from eastern Christianity when the capital of the Holy Roman Empire was moved from Constantinople back to the west. The eastern-style icons, with their linear, unworldly quality and solid areas of bright colors, followed. A return to sculpture was inspired by classical antiquity the scupture of ancient Greece and Rome and moves quickly, within one generation, to incorporate the newer naturalism and humanism in figural work.

Extractions: Art and the Bible home art biographies ca. 1440 - 1482 Flemish artist, one of the greatest of the second half of the 15th century. Born in Ghent he enters the artists' gild in 1467. Several times over dean of the guild. Moves into the Red Cloister monastery near Brussels around 1478, presumably because he was suffering from attacks of mental illness. Characteristic of his work are his monumental figures. He does not master the art of perspective but proportions and relations of figures and background far surpass that of his predecessors. Faces and hands are very expressive. Hugo van der Goes does not sign his work. The only piece that may be ascribed to him with certainty - because it is mentioned by Vasari - is the altarpiece that he is assigned to create by Tommaso Portinari, the Bruges' representative of the Medici's from Florence. In 1481 Van der Goes suffers a nervous breakdown. Although he recovers, he dies the following year. work by Hugo van der Goes qstats(qq,20,0); laadMenu('m1');
