Exciting, first, in the obvious sense that a really comprehensive selection of the work of a remarkable artist is presented to us here for the first time since his death in obscurity a century ago. This is an event which the cognoscenti have awaited with gleeful anticipation and which will be a revelation to many less well acquainted with Solomon's work. They simply will not know what has hit them. Exciting and unsettling, though, by its nature. The keynotes of Solomon's work are ecstasy and ambiguity. Sexual desire, religious ecstasy and aesthetic stimulation blur in a very heady cocktail.

Extractions: Simeon Solomon was born into a prominent Jewish family in London. He trained at his brother Abraham's studio in Gower Street, then at Cary's Academy in Bloomsbury, following which in 1855 he attended the RA schools, having his first picture exhibited at the Academy when he was only 18 years old. His brother Abraham Solomon and sister Rebecca Solomon were also artists. Early on, Simeon Solomon met Rossetti , and became part of his circle. He produced very Pre-Raphaelite pictures, and was also influenced in his art by Burne-Jones . He was part of a sketching society with Albert Moore Henry Holiday and W. B. Richmond , and was also a friend of E. J. Poynter , later to become President of the Royal Academy. His friends included others within the larger Pre-Raphaelite circle, such as Holman Hunt , Tennyson and Swinburne. Unfortunately, Solomon was arrested for indecent exposure in 1871, at which all his friends dropped his acquaintance, and he became a pariah, moving to the workhouse and eventually dying of drink. However, even in his decline, he continued to paint, selling his work to college students at one pound a time in the mid-70s. Solomon's work includes Moses , which on exhibition in 1860 at the Royal Academy received wide praise and gave a big boost to his career, Isaac and Rebecca , now at the Victoria and Albert Museum , typical of his old testament works, and several ideal portraits, of which an example is at Leighton House . He also made several

Solomon's reign was marked by foreign alliances (notably with Egypt and Phoenicia) and the greatest extension of Israel's territory in biblical times. He built numerous cities, constructed copper smelting furnaces in the Negev, and had the first temple built at Jerusalem. However, his despotism resulted in the alienation of N Israel and the revolt of Jeroboam I Solomon's wisdom is proverbial. Proverbs and Ecclesiastes were ascribed to him, as was Wisdom of Solomon , a book of the Old Testament Apocrypha , and the Song of Solomon bears his name. Links PhD Thesis "The Life of Simeon Solomon after 1873" (University of York) Frederick Hollyer, photograph of artist, Simeon Solomon,                                  Love in Autumn, 1866.                                       Nirvana, 1895 At the height of his artistic fame, the Jewish, homosexual, Pre-Raphaelite and Aesthetic artist Simeon Solomon was arrested on the 11th February, 1873 for attempted sodomy. He was arrested with George Roberts, a sixty year old stableman in a urinal, by police constable William Mitchell, around the corner from Marylebone Lane Police Station, in Stratford Place Mews, off Oxford Street . On the following day they were read the charge âthat they did unlawfully attempt feloniously to commit the abominable crime of buggeryâ. Subsequently, Solomon was fortunate enough to escape a custodial prison sentence but was required to pay a surety of £100 on condition that he returned to court if necessary. This verdict essentially allowed Solomon to walk legally free from the court. The unfortunate Roberts was, however, sentenced to eighteen months hard labour in the House of Correction at Cold Bath Fields. It has always remained unclear what happened to Simeon Solomon during and after his arrest for attempted buggery in 1873. To date scholars have only been able to speculate about his whereabouts and activities during the remaining thirty-two years of his life, relying primarily on information published by a series of unreliable writers such as Robert Ross, at the turn of the century, Julia Ellsworth Ford in 1908 and the sensationalist tabloid news journalist Bernard Falk in 1937. Indeed, all three writers claimed to have met Solomon towards the end of his life, and tales of the artistâs âdescent into the abyssâ abound, as a âprofessional mendicantâ amongst the âdregs of humanity,â and as a man âavoided by all who knew himâ.

Love Revealed: Simeon Solomon And The Pre-Raphaelites The work of simeon solomon is celebrated at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery to mark the centenary of his death. The museum acquired its first work by http://www.studio-international.co.uk/painting/love_revealed.asp
Extractions: 11 September-26 November 2006 His biographer, Julia Ellsworth Ford, described him as 'the psychic portrait-painter of Death, Night and Sleep'. For the uninitiated, the work of Simeon Solomon is strange and enigmatic. Studio described his work thus: In places nothing more than languidly sentimental, his art at other times rises to heights of a proud and remote mysticism, which only meets its equal in Blake. The artist's ideal is one of Hellenic beauty always, and though comparison has been made between his early work and the drawings of Rossetti, his adherence to this ideal and his love of the abstract is in antagonism to the spirit of Rossetti's art. Rapid transitions from weakness to greatness and then again to weakness gave this extraordinary character to the artist's work as a whole, as it was to be seen in this exhibition. It is inequality to some extent explained by the unhappiness for which the artist's temperament seemed fated in its curious incompatibility with life's daily traffic. The love that dare not speak its name . Lord Alfred Douglas was Wilde's lover and the poem was read out in court. The trial of Oscar Wilde in 1895 demanded public recognition of same-sex love and it ensured a public condemnation of it, with the sentence of two years of hard labour. As Emmanuel Cooper states, in his essay to mark the centenary of
