His parents were Henry Thoby Prinsep , who was for sixteen years a member of the Council of India, and Sarah Monckton Pattle ; sister of pioneering photographer Julia Margaret Cameron (nee Pattle) and Maria Jackson (nee Pattle), grandmother of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell . Henry and Sarah had settled at Little Holland House and made it a centre of artistic society. Henry Prinsep was an intimate friend of G. F. Watts , under whom his son first studied. Val Prinsep also worked in Paris in the atelier Gleyre ; and Taffy in his friend George du Maurier 's novel Trilby , is said to have been sketched from him. His father, Henry Thoby Prinsep, who was for sixteen years a member of the Council of India , had settled at Little Holland House, which became a centre of artistic society. Henry Prinsep was an intimate friend of G. F. Watts, under whom his son first studied. Val Prinsep also worked in Paris in the atelier Gleyre; and "Taffy" in his friend Du Maurier's novel Trilby, is said to have been sketched from him. He was an intimate friend of Millais and of Burne-Jones , with whom he travelled in Italy . He had a share with Rossetti and others in the decoration of the hall of the Oxford Union. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1862 with his "Bianca Capella," his first picture, which attracted marked notice, being a portrait (1866) of General Gordon in Chinese costume ; the best of his later exhibits were "A Versailles ," "The Emperor Theophilus chooses his Wife," "The Broken Idol" and "The Goose Girl."    Extractions: Val Prinsep was the son of an senior Indian Civil Servant, Thoby Prinsep, and his far more extrovert wife, Sara, one of the celebrated Pattle sisters, the most famous of whom was Julia Margaret Cameron 1815-1879, the great pioneering photographer. If any one individual could be described as a Pre-Raphaelite photographer it was she. Prinsep was brought-up at Little Holland House in London, where his mother kept open house, and the most interesting artistic salon of the day. Habitues included Dickens, Tennyson, Bourne-Jones, Browning, Rossetti, and Carlyle. In the famous words of Sara Prinsep, G F Watts 'came to stay three days; he stayed thirty years.' Here under Watt's influence the young Val Prinsep decided to become a painter. Prinsep was a tall, powerfully built, imposing individual. He became ARA in 1878, and a full RA in 1894. He was Professor of Painting at the RA from 1901 until his death. He married Florence Leyland, daughter of the industrial magnate and art collector Frederick Leyland, thus becoming extremely wealthy. Prinsep painted genre pictures and portraits. It is widely felt that Prinsep did not achieve his true potential- Watts felt that he just did not work hard enough. His paintings are held to be very uneven in quality. He was, though, an important figure in the Victorian art world.

Photographic Art Valentine Cameron Prinsep (14 February 1838 - 11 November 1904), British Pre-raphaelite painter. He was born in Calcutta , being the son of a wealthy British merchant, Sir Henry Thoby Prinsep, who worked for the famous West India Company. The family returned to London in 1843, buying a splendid house in Holland Park , one of the most elegant quarters of London . Prinsep began his artistic training at the Haileybury, under the guidance of George Frederick Watts (1817-1904), very popular at that time for his portraits and history scenes. It was Watts who convinced Prinsep to continue his training in Paris, with Gleyre, who was the most popular professor among British students. Prinsep returned to England and between 1862 - 1904 exhibited more than a hundred works at the Royal Academy , yet his success was moderate. A rather talented artist, he produced mainly history scenes and portraits, but also classical and biblical compositions. Despite his best efforts, his creations could not match those of artists such as Alma-Tadema, Leighton or Poynter.
