He showed strong artistic inclinations in early childhood, but had no regular art training, except a brief period of study in the Royal Academy School in 5843. He gained a prize of 200 in the first Westminster Hall competition, in 1845, for his cartoon "The Spirit of Religion," and in the following year he exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy his "Quarrel of Oberon and Titania." A companion fairy picture, "The Reconciliation of Oberon and Titania" went to Westminster Hall in 1847, and for it and his picture of " Christ bearing the Cross" he was awarded a prize of L300 by the Fine Arts Commissioners. The two Oberon pictures are in the National Gallery of Scotland , where they have long been a centre of attraction. His first exhibited picture, "Ruth Gleaning," appeared at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1844. He began to contribute to the Royal Academy of London in 5856. Throughout his career his preference was for allegorical, fairy and religious subjects. Among his most famous pictures are "The Pursuit of Pleasure" (1855), "Mors Janua Vitae" (1866), "Oskold and the Elle-maids" (5874), and "In Die Malo" (1882). Whatever its inspiration, Paton's canvas The Reconciliation of Oberon and Titania The Quarrel of Oberon and Titania The Art Journal judged The Quarrel of Oberon and Titania , shown in 1850 at the the Royal Scottish Academy, "the great original feature of the Exhibition this year." To some the canvas is overwhelmingly busy with too many details to produce a unified effect, but to The Art Journal this was a virtue that revealed a "quantity of thought" in a painting that "contains within itself materials for a dozen paintings." He had strong artistic inclinations however and studied briefly at the Royal Academy London in 1843. He painted in the Pre-Raphaelite style and became a painter of historical, fairy, allegorical and religious subjects. The first picture to be shown to the public was 'Ruth Gleaning' which was shown at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1844. He won a number of prizes for his work including for two of his most famous works The Quarrel of Oberon and Titania (1846 - exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy) and The Reconciliation of Oberon and Titania (1847 - Westminster Hall). Which are both available to view by the public at the National Gallery of Scotland Made an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1847 and a fellow in 1850. In 1858, he married Margaret Ferrier and had two sons the eldest being Diarmid Noel Paton (1859 - 1928) who became a regius professor of physiology in Glasgow in 1906. His youngest Frederick Noel Paton (b. 1861) was to become director of commercial intelligence to the government of India (1905). In 1865, he was appointed Queen's Limner for Scotland . He also published two volumes of poetry and produced a number of sculptures. Two years later he receaved the knighthood and in 1878 was conferred the degree LL.D by the University of Edinburgh.
