Her parents were Arthur Edmund Oakley and Cornelia Swain. Two of her grandfathers were member of the National Academy of Design. In 1892, she studied at the Art Student's League in New York. A year later, she studied in England and France. After her return to the United States in 1896, she began study with Howard Pyle at Drexel Institute . She had early success as a popular illustrator for magazines including The Century Magazine Collier's Weekly St. Nicholas Magazine , and Woman's Home Companion Oakley was greatly influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites .    Extractions: BIOGRAPHY OF VIOLET OAKLEY Violet Oakley was born June 10, 1874, in Bergen Heights, New Jersey, the daughter of Arthur Edmund Oakley and Cornelia Swain Oakley. With two grandfathers who were members of the National Academy of Design and a multitude of relatives involved in the arts, she found her early efforts at drawing heartily encouraged. She once described her desire to paint as hereditary and chronic. Violet Oakley studied at the Art Students League in New York and after almost a year left for Paris to study with a noted portraitist of the day, Edmund Aman-Jean. She also spent a summer studying in England. In 1896 she returned to Philadelphia and enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She did not remain there long, for in 1897 she began her study with Howard Pyle at Drexel Institute. Pyle's recognition of her sense of color and ability in composition caused him to push her toward stained glass design and work in a larger scale than illustration allowed. The artist herself always felt that Pyle had been one of the two main influences on her work, the other being the Pre-Raphaelites. By 1899 she had received her first commission for a stained glass window. From this early point on, she never returned full time to illustration but continued to work in large scale.

That success led to many commissions and an international reputation as a painter of moral and idealistic subjects. She painted the first delegates of the League of Nations and the United Nations, and published illustrated books in support of world peace, disarmament and human rights. And then there are the paintings of her youth. Violet Oakley had a confidence and independence in her early paintings that allowed her to follow her heart. As she travelled and studied in America and Europe, she exhuberantly painted portraits and landscapes in a spontaneous, impressionistic style. The result was a body of work of jewel-like brilliance. She studied art in Philadelphia and England. She came from a family of artists. Both her grandfathers were members of The National Academy of Design. From the mid 1890's until 1902, Ms. Oakley had a studio at 1523 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia. For the next four years, she lived in Villanova, PA. From 1906 until her death in 1961, Ms. Oakley lived and worked at 627 St. George's Road in Mt. Airy, Philadelphia. Religion and Politics Ms. Oakley was an Episcopalian who converted to Christian Science. She later became immersed in William Penn's Quaker ideas of universal brotherhood, freedom of religion, and a world court of arbitration to supplant wars. Her political activity focused on international issues of world peace and disarmament. Ms Oakley was a pacifist and a feminist of that generation of feminists that won the vote for women. Artistic Achievements Ms. Oakley began as an illustrator of books and magazines. She developed other talents: stained glass; designs for posters; work in charcoal and pastels; pencil, ink and watercolor on paper; oil on canvas.

There are 43 murals by Oakley in the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg. She was commissioned in 1902 by Joseph Miller Huston, the architect of the capitol, to paint murals for the Governors Grand Reception Room. She completed this series in 1906. In 1911 after Edwin Austin Abbey died, leaving two rooms of work unfinished at the capitol, Violet was given another contract by the state. This work was for the Senate and Supreme Court room paintings which she completed in 1927.
