Extractions: click picture to enlarge By 1914 he was seventy four years of age,but he was yet to have his most fulfilling periods of painting. The most famous paintings following this time were his "Decoration" series.They were paintings of his water garden and the most well known were of waterlilies. This was the culmination of his long journey as a painter.He was encouraged to do these paintings by Georges Clementeau, a well known polititian and a close friend who sustained his later career as a painter. His journey as an artist began in the late 1950s,when he was nearly twenty. He was discovered by Eugene Bodin who encouraged him to paint outdoors with him. Bodin believed that "Everything that is painted directly and on the spot always has a force or power, or vivacity of touch that is not to be found in studio work". Monet found this type of painting more exciting than traditional academic studio work and this preference lasted throughout his life. In a letter written to Gustave Gaffroy in 1920 he expresses his gratitude and appreciation of Bodin as the main mentor of his career.He briefley studied academic figure painting in art school due to pressure from his parents.These paintings were accepted by the traditional salon but Monets intrests lay elswhere. His main influences came from painters who did not work in the traditional academic chiaroscuro style notably the Dutch painter,Johan Barthold Jongkind.

The sunlight which floods the paintings of the Impressionists - who did most of their painting out of doors, directly from nature - here plays the central role. Monet spent his childhood in Le Havre, which he periodically visited. The Le Coteaux estate at Sainte-Adresse near Le Havre belonged to Monet's cousin, Paul-Eugene Lecadre. Settling here in the summer of 1867, the artist painted several landscapes in the garden of the estate, of which "Woman in the Garden" is of central importance.

Nace el 14 de noviembre de 1840 en el 45 de la rue Lafitte, en el seno de una familia de comerciantes. Su padre se llamaba Claude Adolphe y su madre Louise Justine Aubrée, siendo el segundo hijo del matrimonio. Los problemas económicos que atravesaba el padre del futuro artista motivaron el traslado a Le Havre, ya que allí podía participar en el próspero negocio de su cuñado. Monet recibió sus primeras lecciones artísticas en la escuela, de la mano de François-Charles Ochard, alumno del pintor neoclásico Jacques-Louis David. En estos momentos estaría más interesado por los dibujos graciosos y caricaturas que por adquirir una formación artística. A los 15 años ya tenía relativa fama como caricaturista, realizando un buen número de caricaturas de ciudadanos de Le Havre por las que cobraba entre 10 y 20 francos, consiguiendo una pequeña fortuna de 2.000 francos. Los impresionistas realizarían siete exposiciones más de las que Monet participará en cinco. La situación económica de los Monet vuelve a ser preocupante. En otoño de 1876 entabla amistad con el magnate Ernest Hoschedé y su esposa Alice, siendo invitado a pasar una temporada en el palacio de Montgeron. Durante el invierno, Monet regresa a París para trabajar en la serie de la estación de Saint-Lazare donde la atmósfera se convertirá en la principal protagonista. En 1878 los Monet abandonan Argenteuil para pasar una temporada en París donde nacerá su segundo hijo, Michel, el 17 de marzo.

He was a successful caricaturist in his native Le Havre, but after studying plein-air landscape painting, he moved to Paris in 1859. He soon met future Impressionists Camille Pissarro and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Renoir and Monet began painting outdoors together in the late 1860s, laying the foundations of Impressionism. In 1874, with Pissarro and Edgar Degas, Monet helped organize the Société Anonyme des Artistes, Peintres, Sculpteurs, Graveurs, etc., the formal name of the Impressionists' group. During the 1870s Monet developed his technique for rendering atmospheric outdoor light, using broken, rhythmic brushwork. He received little but abuse from public and critics alike, who complained that the paintings were formless, unfinished, and ugly. He and his family endured abject poverty. By the 1880s, however, his paintings started selling; Pissarro accused him of commercialism, and younger painters called him passé, for he remained loyal to the Impressionists' early goal of capturing the transitory effects of nature through direct observation. In 1890 he began creating paintings in series, depicting the same subject under various conditions and at different times of the day. His late pictures, made when he was half-blind, are shimmering pools of color almost totally devoid of form.

Extractions: Durante una estancia en Bennecourt, a orillas del Sena, Monet realizó esta maravillosa escena protagonizada por Camille, su compañera con la que había tenido un hijo. Camille se sitúa bajo unos árboles a orillas del agua, junto a un bote. Al fondo vemos las casas del pueblo, algunas de ellas reflejadas en las aguas del río. El estudio lumínico es sensacional obteniendo a la perfección el efecto de luces y sombras, creando un ambiente tomado directamente del natural. Las pinceladas han sido aplicadas formando pequeñas comas, eliminando los detalles. Resulta significativo cómo las formas se van eliminando paulatinamente como podemos observar en los reflejos.
