Extractions: The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was founded in 1848 by a group of English painters: Dante Gabriel Rossetti John Everett Millais and William Holman Hunt , as well as poets and critics: William Michael Rossetti, an art critic and Dante's younger brother; the art critic Frederic George Stephens; the painter James Collinson; and the sculptor and poet Thomas Woolner . Millais left the group in 1859, but as the second generation Pre-Raphaelites, other English artists joined it, including the painter Edward Coley Burne-Jones ; the poet and artist William Morris was never a Pre-Raphaelite in the true conception of the term. The group reacted against the Victorian materialism and the conventions of the Royal Academy in London and was inspired by medieval and early Renaissance painters up to and including the Italian painter Raphael. They found their inspiration at first from the bible, history and poems, but soon the subjects from modern life were also used rooted in realism and truth to nature. Pre-Raphaelite art became distinctive for its blend of archaic, romantic, and moralistic qualities.

Victorian Art In Britain meteyard On April 4 1947 at Malt House, Cookhill, Alcester, sidney Harold meteyard, devoted husband of the late Kate Muriel (nee Eadie) in his 80th year. http://www.victorianartinbritain.co.uk/biog/meteyard.htm
Extractions: Meteyard was born in Stourbridge in the West Midlands. One can only wonder at the mentality of parents who gave him the Christian names both Sidney and Harold-there was no escape. He was essentially a follower of Edward Burne-Jones, and one of his most artistically successful followers at that. His most famous painting is "I am Half Sick of Shadows" (Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery), and a beautiful and accomplished painting it is, based on Tennyson's poem the Lady of Shallot. Sometimes the gallery actually has this picture out on display, rather than in store with most of its great 19th century collection. The colours in the painting are vivid and rich, the flowers in the foreground are wonderfully well done, as is the deeply coloured drapery of the Lady, who as modelled by the painter's wife Kate. Some time ago I saw a self-portrait of the painter as an earnest and serious young man, in a Sotheby's catalogue. Meteyard had studied at the Birmingham School of art, and subsequently lectured there. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1900 until 1920, when his pictures would have been regarded as extremely old fashioned. Meteyard continued to live in the Birmingham area all his life, and seems to have been rather a diffident individual. Considering he lived until Spring 1947, little is known about him.
