Early in the sale, a circa 1914 Frank Weston Benson (American, 1862-1951) drypoint on paper print with a plate size of 87/8 by 7 inches was offered. From an edition of only 50 prints, it depicted a rural scene titled "River Drifters." Estimated at $7/900, it went off the block for $1,880. A Thomas Hart Benton (American 1889-1975) print titled "The Prodigal Son," dated 1939, from an edition of 250 sold well over the presale estimate of $1,2/1,800, reaching $2,115. Another print by Benton, this one titled "Night Firing," sold for $2,937. The big news of this sale came when an oil on canvas measuring 27 by 391/2 inches by French artist Jean Richard Goubie (1842-1899) was offered. Titled "Before the Hunt," this vivid painting was estimated at $12/18,000. With several phones active, the price advanced quickly, soaring to its selling price of $105,000. Extractions: Tradition American Daniel Ridgeway Knight, born in 1839, studied first at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and then saved his money for eight years in order to finance an education at Lecole Des Beaux Arts in Paris from 1881-83. Knight was an expatriate plein-air painter and spent most of his career living in France. His paintings often depicted an idealized young peasant woman in crisp academic style and minute detail of skin and gesture. These women were usually placed in a sunlit landscape. His painting Hailing the Ferry (1888) won him praise and awards in the U.S. and France and was soon issued as a lithograph, becoming one of the most copied 19th century paintings. The design was even used in fabric decoration. During WWI, Knight worked for the French as a pictorial propagandist. He died in 1924. 4574 Meadowridge Road

Extractions: This American landscape painter was born in Philadelphia in 1839 and studied under Gleyre and Meissonier in Paris. He then decided to settle in Rolleboise, a rural area at the edge of Paris. Knight is best known for his skill in painting landscapes and beautiful women. He exhibited throughout Europe but particularly at the Paris Salon, where he received an Honourable Mention in 1882. He was awarded a Silver Medal in 1889 at the Munich Salon and in the same year became a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur. Knights work was soundly researched and is represented today in many leading museums. He died in 1924.
