Born in Pennsylvania , he enrolled at the Fine Arts Academy, and among his colegues were Mary Cassat and Thomas Eakins. In 1861 he left to Paris , where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, under Alexandre Cabanel, at the same time working as an apprentice in the studio of Marc-Gabriel-Charles Gleyre. He would return to Philadelphia in 1863, to fight in the Union Army. During the war he captured in his sketches and drawings battle scenes and later he founded the Philadelphia Sketch Club, where he exhibited several works. In 1871 he married Rebecca Morris Webster and began working as a portrait painter, in order to gain the sum of money needed for returning to France . In 1872 he settled in France , where he met Pierre Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley si Wordsworth, all of them having a strong influence on Knight's style. He was very colse to Jean-Louis Ernest Meissonier and Jean-Francois Millet. He met Millet in 1874, when Knight was painting in Barbizon , and was attracted from the start by Millet's main theme : the rural universe. Yet he was dissapointed by the fatallist view used by Millet, so he chose to paint the scenes for peasant life in an optimistic, ideal way, very popular at that time. For the next decade and even more Knight will concentrate on this subject, which brought him the admiration of the critics.

Extractions: In order to faithfully record the scenery, Knight studied the different phases of the day and their effects on the environment. Knight built a glass studio outside of his home, enabling him to paint outdoors, even in the dead of winter. Whether he was concentrating on the evening with the glow of moonlight upon the Seine River, or on a young woman in a brightly colored flower garden at midday, each scene is depicted with great detail and with specific attention to a realistic portrayal of the landscape. Daniel Ridgway Knight was born on March 15,1839 in Pennsylvania. He studied and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, were he was a classmate of Mary Cassatt and Thomas Eakins. In 1861, he went to Paris to study at L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Cabanel, and to apprentice in the atelier of Charles-Gabriel-Gleyere. (Artist at Chateau de Rolleboise) He returned to Philadelphia in 1863 to serve in the Union Army. During the war, Knight practiced sketching facial expressions and capturing human emotion in his work. He sketched battle scenes, recording the war for history. He founded the Philadelphia Sketch Club, where he showed works that dealt with the Civil War, mythology, and scenes from opera. In 1871 Knight married Rebecca Morris Webster and after the wedding he began working as a portrait painter in order to make enough money to return to France.

Extractions: Born into a strict Quaker home in Philadelphia, Knight was groomed for work in a local hardware store. He chose art instead, enrolling in 1858 in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where his fellow students included Mary Cassatt, Thomas Eakins, William Sartain, and Everett Shinn. A student from France, Lucien Gr6pon, plied Knight with stories of fine classes and fine wine to be found in Paris. After helping to establish the Philadelphia Sketch Club in 1861 Knight sailed for France that same year, the first to do so among his Philadelphia peers. In Paris, Knight enrolled in the Atelier Gleyre and the classes of Alexander Cabanel at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. While with Gleyre, Knight began long-term friendships with the young Impressionists Alfred Sisley and Auguste Renoir, an unusual relationship for an aspiring history painter. As the American Civil War moved closer to Philadelphia in 1863
