Born and raised in Vienna, he attended the School of Applied Arts on a scholarship and spent the early part of his career as a decorative muralist, completing commissions in newly erected public buildings throughout the city. In 1897 he co-founded the Secession, a group of artists rebelling against the conventional forces that dominated Viennese art circles of the time. Los hermanos Klimt estudiaban gracias a una beca y pronto empezaron a recibir pequeños encargos, por lo que la situación económica familiar empezó a aliviarse. Su primer trabajo fueron los dibujos de las vidrieras de la Iglesia Votiva de Viena. Tras tres años dibujando moldes de escayola y estatuas clásicas -la verdadera fuente del arte en aquellos momentos- habían superado la formación en la Escuela, por lo que pensaron presentarse a las oposiciones estatales para profesores de dibujo en las escuelas secundarias. Sin embargo, el arqueólogo e historiador del arte Rudolf Eitelberger von Edelberg, tras contemplar sus trabajos, les animó a que continuaran su carrera como pintores, acudiendo a las clases del profesor Ferdinand Laufberger , consiguiendo una beca de 30 florines al mes. A la muerte de Laufberger en 1881 será Julius Victor Berger quien se encargue de su aprendizaje, permaneciendo en la Escuela de Artes y Oficios hasta 1883.En 1881 los tres jóvenes artistas crearon un estudio, tras haber recibido importantes encargos como la decoración del patio del Kunshistorisches Museum de Viena o de los techos del Palacio Sturnany en Viena y del balneario Carlsbad en Checoslovaquia. La Compañía de Artistas empezaba a cosechar importantes éxitos debido a que podían trabajar más deprisa que un pintor en solitario, asegurándose la unidad de estilo, a pesar de que el trabajo estaba muy estructurado y cada uno hacía su cometido. La mayor parte del año 1883 la Compañía estará decorando el teatro municipal de Reichemberg. K > Klimt, Gustav E-MAIL Save Museum of Modern Art Klimt was born into humble circumstances in 1862, but his gift for drawing propelled him into art school and under the wing of Hans Makart, an immensely successful academic history painter. Klimt worked first on Makart's commissions; by the early 1880s he was receiving his own and increasing acclaim. But by the mid-1880s, his allegorical figures sometimes looked like contemporary women and their gold-patterned gowns presaged Art Nouveau. It is not surprising that his best paintings are the portraits, which escape his penchant for universalized melodrama. His even more modest drawings, which he produced in quantity, may be his greatest, most modern works - though they, too, have their problems. Their erotic depictions of women have frequently been seen as sexist, a charge strengthened by Klimt's habitual womanizing. Klimt died too soon to achieve genuine greatness as a painter. He never abandoned his original conviction that the highest form of painting was architectural decoration that tackled big themes, even as his idea of decoration expanded to include the influence of Egyptian and Japanese art, Byzantine mosaics and the flattened surfaces of Monet and Seurat. — Roberta Smith

Perhaps the outstanding image of this goddess since Classical antiquity, however, is his Pallas Athene of 1898 [Fig. 1] (1). She is a very different persona from his famous femmes fatales whose sexuality is overwhelming, for example his Judith (1901) and Danae (1907-8). Here it is Athena’s divinity which Klimt finds more interesting, rather than her sexuality, which is not surprising given the gender ambiguities she demonstrated in Greek antiquity. Perhaps Klimt implies that power is a catalyst to sexual instincts, as history has long suggested that power is one of the most important sexual stimuli in human behavior and that the desire for power is strongly connected to sexual desire. In any case, this somewhat asexual Greek goddess becomes Klimt's most powerful female in his art. The Athena of myth is a paradox, an external contradiction but internally consistent: a goddess with what some women, Pomeroy and Cantarella, for example, consider masculine powers (2). The Athena of a state religion or state cult is another persona and not the subject of this study. In mythology Athena poses a curious androgynous power. Is she externally female but internally male or is it that her myth persona is ambiguous? To us, wisdom and war may seem strange mindmates of this patron goddess, impossible alloys. Here it may be merely a cross-cultural and diachronic dilemma, but Athena's compound persona is nonetheless fascinating.
