There are over two hundred in the USA and others in Australia, Canada, Africa, Ireland and other countries. Shown below is St. Leonard, one of his early windows at Staplefield in Sussex. Kempe probably copied the canopy from the windows made around 1300 at Merton College Oxford. Kempe was born at Ovingdean Hall near Brighton. In 1858 he went to Pembroke College Oxford to study for the priesthood. Later he designed the College Chapel. He had a bad stutter. This made him decide that he could not be a priest. Instead he would be a church decorator and design beautiful windows, wall paintings and embroideries. Kempe went to sketch old windows in England and abroad. He studied church decoration under the architect G. F. Bodley and in the stained glass firm of Clayton and Bell. In 1864 Bodley asked him to help with the wall paintings at All Saints Cambridge. In 1868 he asked him to design the wall paintings in his new church of St. John at Tuebrook in Liverpool. In 1866 Clayton and Bell asked him to design the Bishop Hooper memorial window in Gloucester Cathedral. In 1866 he also designed windows for Karachi. These led to other orders in India. He used his own glass works to make windows for Bombay Cathedral. He also designed over 200 windows for the USA and 72 for Australia. His output was enormous and his windows can be seen all over Britain.

Extractions: It has been said that the most famous suffer the greatest reverse of fate. It is certainly true of Charles Eamer Kempe whose distinctive style in stained glass reached the peak of popularity in the late 19th century but for some years has had scant appreciation from modern critics. A notable exception is Owen Chadwick who states in his book The Victorian Church that "the art attained its Victorian zenith not with the innovation of William Morris or Edward Burne-Jones but in the Tractarian artist Charles Eamer Kempe". There is scarcely a church in Britain within a radius of thirty miles that does not have a Kempe window or some other example of his ecclesiastical furniture. In 1987 it was the 150th Anniversary of his birth and the Kempe Society, formed in his name in 1984, celebrated the occasion with an exhibition which visited the Cathedrals of Durham, Chichester and Southwark and the Church of St Botolphs Aldgate in the City of London and produced an informative leaflet which some of the following information is taken. Charles Eamer Kempe was born on June 29th. 1837, at Ovingdean Hall, near Brighton, the fifth son and youngest child of Nathaniel Kemp, (Charles preferred the older spelling of his surname later in life) a prominent figure in the county and his young second wife Augusta Caroline, the eligible daughter of Sir John Eamer, city magnate and former Lord Mayor of London. Brought up by a devout mother at the time of the Tractarian revival in the Church of England, Kempe hoped to become a clergyman but, as an undergraduate at Pembroke College, Oxford he realised his severe speech impediment would prevent him from passing on the Christian message by word of mouth. Providence, it would seem acted wisely for although the disappointment was great Charles found some sublimation in developing a latent artistic ability.

Extractions: Charles E Kempe (1837-1907) was a painter of walls, ceilings and woodwork of churches in the 1860's. The style then in vogue reflected a resurgance of interest to high church practices. Kempe's training served him well, and he started his own stained glass company, CE Kempe and Co in London, in 1868. Kempe was not a trained artist, but was nevertheless artistic, and able to suggest ideas which could be developed by his artists and cartoonists. He insisted that only the firm's name should take the credit for the standard of work produced, and that individual members of the studio remain anonymous. Kempe perfected the use of silver stain on clear glass, which leaves a yellow tint, which could be delicate or deep depending on the amount of stain. His greatest stylistic influence was the stained glass of Northern Germany and Flanders from the 16th Century. He took many trips to Europe, often taking the Kempe Company artists with him. Extractions: SUSSEX CONNECTIONS (click here to return to the Archive menu page) The Kemp family has been of note in Sussex for centuries but Lindfield, near Haywards Heath, boasts its own famous son. Charles Eamer Kempe (1837 -1907) was an artist and designer of all aspects of ecclesiastical decoration and is particularly remembered for his stained glass. Many are the windows of churches in Sussex which are adorned with examples of his skilled glassmaking. Charles Kempe visited Lindfield while still at Oxford and in 1875, the year after his mothers death in Brighton, he purchased what was then Townlands Farm, the estate consisting of 200 acres, which he renamed Old Place. The house was a small manor dating from 1590 and owned by the Chal(l)oners. Kempes maternal grandfather had been a a city magnate and Lord Mayor of London, so he was able to combine his love of craftsmanship with the ability to employ and buy the best for in his new home in Sussex. The house he had bought had rooms too small for his purposes and more space was needed if he was to offer the hospitality that he had in mind for his friends. He much increased the size, and his purist style led him to create the additions strictly in keeping with the date of the existing house, without the affectations of his Victorian peers.
