Frederick Trevelyan Goodall R.A. Frederick Trevelyan Goodall was born on September 17th, 1822, in St. John's Wood, London, the second son of Edward Goodall renowned steel line engraver. His mother was of Huguenot descent. He was one of six brothers and four sisters and received his education at the Wellington Road Academy, a private school where Charles Dickens had attended. Two of his brothers, Edward Angelo and Walter, became well known watercolour artists, and a sister Eliza, exhibited at the Royal Academy under her married name of Wild. John Ruskin Clarkson Stanfield, Augustus Pugin David Roberts and of course Turner , were among regular visitors to the Goodall house and encouraged Frederick and his brother Edward A. to take up the profession. They spent their free time sketching at the zoo in Regent's Park, the Albany Street Barracks and along the banks of the Thames. They watched the building of the tunnel at Rotherhithe and made friends with Tom Page, the engineer. A chance meeting with Isambard Brunel led to Frederick's first commission: six watercolour drawings showing the tunnel works, four of which were hung in the Royal Academy when Frederick was sixteen. His first oil of a drowned miner won a silver medal of the Society of Arts. The money he made from these paintings paid for a visit to Brittany with

In order to provide authentic detail to his paintings, Goodall brought back sheep and goats from Egypt. The Eyptian theme was prominent in his work, with 170 paintings being exhibited at the Royal Academy over 46 years. Goodall's work received high praise and acclaim from critics and artists alike and he earned a fortune from his paintings. It may be adjustable so as to accommodate different "Seat Depths" adopted by individual manufacturers making it acceptable as a replacement unit. The mechanism may operate with a 90 DEG action from open to closed position and the cam slot may have a flat part providing a 'parked' position and be so shaped that the closing tongue is reduced to almost zero for easy operation. The compression of the washer onto the seal can be preset then locked to repeat for all subsequent closing cycles until such time as further compression is required due to washer wear when the adjustments may be repeated.

    Extractions: Goodall at work The painter Frederick Goodall was one of several artistic children of the eminent engraver (especially of landscapes) Edward Goodall. Frederick Goodall left school aged 13 to work as an engraver in his father's studio, but quickly turned to painting, studying often at London Zoo . By age 15 he was receiving commissions for drawings, including Lambeth Palace and the Thames Tunnel. While working on the latter project he met Brunel, who persuaded the young artist to visit Normandy, and he subsequently visited France several times. Goodall's first picture at the Royal Academy showed French soldiers at leisure ( The Card Players , 1839). In 1844 he visited Ireland, much improving his technique, and his pictures during this period included a range of popular subject pictures, rustic folk in their natural surroundings, peasants with cottages, sentimental pictures of children enjoying themselves, and other harmless genre. One of his most successful pictures was Raising the Maypole (1851), and he was elected ARA in the following year.
