The two men formed a friendship that lasted until Coles death; Durand subsequently became known as the leading figure of the group of artists described as the Hudson River School. In 1840, following in the footsteps of other American artists, Durand left for Europe on the "grand tour" of Europe. What he saw there, however, did not impress him, for he felt that the grandeur of the American landscape, Divine creation unspoiled, far surpassed anything the Europeans had. Durand successfully reflected that sentiment in his sensitively rendered, intimate landscapes of the New England and Hudson River Valley areas of the United States. In addition, his writings on landscape painting, which were published in the art journal The Crayon , influenced a generation of American painters.

Thirty years ago, we had the Summer of Sam. This year brings us the Summer of Durand. It's hardly a bad thing. After all, Asher Brown Durand (17961886) ranks as one in the handful of the greatest American painters. He belongs, with Thomas Cole and Frederic Church, among the big three of the Hudson River School. His works delight in such a way that we do not soon reach the surfeit point. The Summer of Durand nonetheless brings us small comfort. Yes, we can see "Kindred Spirits" (1849) at the Brooklyn Museum's splendid exhibition ("Kindred Spirits: Asher B. Durand and the American Landscape," through July 29). But of all the paintings in the world, "Kindred Spirits" once belonged to the people of New York, where the New York Public Library once "permanently" displayed the painting one of the touchstones not of the culture we imported, but of the culture we made, a picture fragrant with our history and our better angels. The library "deaccessioned" the painting out from under us, selling it to Wal-Mart heiress Alice Walton for her planned museum in Bentonville, Ark. I lost a lot of my faith in New York when that happened.

His paintings express communion with nature, as in Kindred Spirits 1849, a tribute to Thomas Cole, William Cullen Bryant, and the Catskill Mountains. The founding of the Hudson River School of landscape art is ascribed to Cole and Durand. hut(1)

Durand A leading figure of the Hudson River School and a major theorist of landscape painting, Asher B. Durand (1796-1886) began as an engraver. One of his projects was a reproductive engraving of John Trumbulls Declaration of Independence (1820-23). Influenced by Thomas Cole, Durand began painting landscapes in the late 1830s. Although Durand was attracted to allegorical landscapes, he advocated a direct observation of nature. Still, sketches from nature would serve only as tools for the final version of a composed landscape. In 1855 Durand published his famous "Letters on Landscape Painting," in The Crayon . In his landscapes Durand combined the balanced, classical compositions of Claude Lorrain with details of the American wilderness. Perhaps his most famous work is the New York Public Librarys

Trained by an engraver and at the American Academy of Fine Arts, he established his reputation as a printmaker with his 1823 engraving of the painting The Declaration of Independence, painted by John Trumbull . Subsequently Durand engraved more than 50 portraits of such personages as the general and American President Andrew Jackson , the statesman Henry Clay , and several other American presidents. After 1835 he devoted himself primarily to painting, initially concentrating on figure pieces and portraits, but later turning to realistic landscapes, mostly of the Hudson River valley and New England. With Thomas Cole he originated the Hudson River School of landscape painting; he was one of the first Americans to encourage painting outdoors.
