Like his parents, he also had musical talent and earned a living through the violin. Vlaminck had a passionate interest in painting which was fostered by Robichon, a French artist. He married Suzanne Berly in 1894, but contracted typhoid fever which ended his racing career in 1896. Obliged to support his family, he gave violin lessons and eventually joined the military. It was during one of his military leaves at Chatou when he met Andre Derain on June 1900, which was the meeting that began the school of Chatou and ultimately the birth of Fauve art. Vlaminck painted with the Fauves and exhibited with them at the Salon des Independants and d'Automne. He also published a few novels for which Derain made illustrations and even wrote some poetry. Vlaminck remarried and had two daughters. He continued to travel with Derain during the later years of his life and published dozens of autobiographical accounts of his life and his experiences with other artists

Maurice de Vlaminck (1876-1958) was born in Paris of Flemish heritage into a Bohemian existence, receiving little schooling. He knew Andre Derain (1880-1954) as a boy and the two artists were lifelong friends, eventually setting up a studio at Chatou. In 1901, Vlaminck saw the Van Gogh exhibition at Bernheim-Jeune's, was profoundly affected and his own work began to show the influence of Van Gogh. He also met Matisse in 1901 and exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Independants. In 1905, Vlaminck met the avant-garde artists of their time including Picasso and Matisse and exhibited with a group at Berthe Weil's and at the Salon d'Automne where the critic Louis Vauxcelles named him and others the Fauvists. In 1908, Vlaminck radically changed his style, moving away from Fauvism and closer to Cezanne's Impressionism. In 1915, Vlaminck moved toward an expressive realism that he continued to pursue the rest of his life, remaining closer to northern or Germanic Expressionism.

Il commence à peindre mais se consacre surtout au cyclisme qui lui permet de gagner sa vie, jusqu’à l’âge de 18 ans. Il rencontre alors Susanne Berly, qui devient sa femme. À la suite d’une maladie, il abandonne le cyclisme et vit en donnant des leçons de violon et en jouant dans les cafés. Également journaliste anarchiste, il évolue dès lors dans un milieu bohème et mélomane, et cherche d’abord sa voie dans la musique avant de se consacrer à la peinture.
