The orphaned son of a wealthy Paris family, David went on to study art, first under distant relative François Boucher, then under gifted teacher and rococo painter Joseph-Marie Vien. Later, in Italy for 5 years, David became engrossed in archaeology, classical architecture, and mythology, which, along with the paintings of his compatriot Nicolas Poussin, provided inspiration for his work as leading neoclassical painter ( David’s era was the Age of Enlightenment, whose standard-bearers (David Hume, Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Heinrich Heine, and others) revolutionized economics, politics, and religion, steering them away from authoritarian tradition, toward reason and the common good. The arts, abandoning the baroque, relinquished the ornate, aristocratic, and frivolous excesses of rococo. They turned toward nature and heroic morality, and by extension, toward the ancient “apostles of reason,” the classics, and their “noble simplicity and calm grandeur.” Italy’s artistic leadership declined, leaving the role of guardian of Western art to France and the students of Vien (

Se formó en el taller de Vien, pasando después a la Academia de París (1766), obteniendo como premio una pensión para trasladarse a Roma. Allí descubrió la Antigüedad clásica, interesándose por la pintura idealista de los Carracci durante su breve estancia en Bolonia. En Roma también se interesaría por Rafael y Poussin . En la Ciudad Eterna será captado por los teóricos del Neoclasicismo, Winckelmann y Mengs especialmente. Años después realizaría un segundo viaje a Roma, estancia que duró cinco años, adoptando una técnica tenebrista aprendida de Caravaggio . Simultanea grandes composiciones históricas con retratos para ganarse la vida. De regreso a París, se vio inmerso en la Revolución Francesa, participando activamente y ocupando importantes cargos, hasta convertirse en el pintor oficial de la Revolución. Su amistad con Robespierre le llevará a la cárcel, siendo liberado en 1795 para convertirse en el retratista oficial de Napoleón, preocupándose por la captación psicológica de los modelos. Su escuela se convirtió en la más famosa de Europa, recibiendo jóvenes de diversos países, entre los que destacan los españoles
