Jasper Francis Cropsey February 18 April 23 ) was an important American landscape artist of the Hudson River School Cropsey was born on his father Jasper Cropsey’s farm in Rossville on Staten Island New York , the oldest of eight children. As a young boy, Cropsey had recurring periods of poor health. While absent from school, Cropsey taught himself to draw. His early drawings included architectural sketches and landscapes drawn on notepads and in the margins of his schoolbooks. Trained as an architect, he set up his own office in 1843. Cropsey studied watercolor and life drawing at the National Academy of Design and first exhibited at there in 1844. A year later he was elected an associate member and turned exclusively to landscape painting in the 1840s, shortly after he was featured in an exhibition entitled "Italian Compositions." Cropsey married Maria Cooley in May , traveled in Europe from 1847- , was elected a full member of the Academy in , and lived in England . During this time he specialized in autumnal landscape paintings of the northeastern United States, often idealized and with vivid colors. With its luminous sky and background and the romantic, wild shore in the foreground, this painting depicts Cropsey's notion of the ideal American landscape, with the solitary Native American hunter in the wilderness. Jasper Francis Cropsey His White Mountain paintings date from 1857 to 1897, indicating a life-long love of the region. Cropsey became interested in Luminism after the Civil War and also in watercolor painting. He founded the American Society of Painters in Water Colors in 1867. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Boston Athenaeum, and at the Royal Academy in London. His work has been preserved by the New York Historical Society, the Staten Island Museum, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Peabody Institute. Failing health may have caused his later paintings to be overworked and consequently less popular.

    Extractions: Although the practice of architecture supported Cropsey throughout the 1840s, it was the rendering of his designs on paper rather than the design process itself that ignited his passion. His success with the watercolor medium kindled a desire to paint with oils, which Cropsey took up in 1841. He learned to handle the new medium by copying from existing works of art, which included his own watercolors as well as Dutch paintings and engravings of paintings by Claude Lorrain. In 1843 he participated for the first time in an exhibition at the National Academy of Design. He was made an associate of the Academy the following year on the merits of View of Orange County with Greenwood Lake in the Distance In June 1856 the Cropseys again went abroad, this time renting a home and studio in the Kensington section of London. The artist arrived with commissions from American patrons for paintings of castles and abbey ruins, thus he traveled a great deal through the English countryside. He found, in turn, that his American subjects were just as eagerly desired abroad. The London printer Gambert and Company commissioned thirty-six views from Cropsey for publication in

The painting, also known as Colonial Brides , was conceived while Benton (1889-1975) was serving in the U.S. Navy at Norfolk, Va., and was executed in oil and egg tempera on canvas about 1927-28. It measures 60-3/16 by 42-1/8 inches. The painting depicts a woman on a wharf selling herself as a bride to pay her passage to the New World. The model for the bride was Benton's wife, Rita. The museum's curator of American arts, Dr. David Park Curry, calls the painting "a rare, important and unexpected example of American regionalism - an early, yet fully mature picture by Benton." "Not only was the picture conceived here in the Commonwealth," Cuny says, "but this particular image also depicts a Colonial subject that admirably complements the nature and focus of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts permanent American collection." The acquisition of the painting was part museum purchase through the Harwood and Louise Cochrane Fund and part gift of Crosby Kemper of Kansas City, Mo.
