The Cottage on the Frontier. PREAMBLE. THE place is France. The time is autumn, in the year eighteen hundred and seventythe year of the war between France and Germany. The persons are, Captain Arnault, of the French army; Surgeon Surville, of the French ambulance; Surgeon Wetzel, of the German army; Mercy Merrick, attached as nurse to the French ambulance; and Grace Roseberry, a traveling lady on her way to England. CHAPTER I. THE TWO WOMEN. IT was a dark night. The rain was pouring in torrents. Late in the evening a skirmishing party of the French and a skirmishing party of the Germans had met, by accident, near the little village of Lagrange, close to the German frontier. In the struggle that followed, the French had (for once) got the better of the enemy. For the time, at least, a few hundreds out of the host of the invaders had been forced back over the frontier. It was a trifling affair, occurring not long after the great German victory of Weissenbourg, and the newspapers took little or no notice of it. Still absorbed in his perusal of the dispatches, and now and then making notes of what he read by the help of writing materials placed at his side, Captain Arnault was interrupted by the appearance of an intruder in the room. Surgeon Surville, entering from the kitchen, drew aside the canvas screen, and approached the little round table at which his superior officer was sitting.

Extractions: Exhibited: Royal Academy, London, 1902; #355 Born in Naples in 1839 he spent the first 25 years of his life growing up and studying art in Italy. By 1855 Perugini had made the acquaintance of the great British Neo-Classical artist Frederic Leighton who was traveling and studying on the Continent. A strong friendship developed between the two and Leighton took the young artist under his wing giving him great encouragement and financial support. By the late 1850s Perugini left for England accompanied by Leighton. Upon his arrival he worked in Leightons studio, but soon set up his own atelier and by 1863, the year he exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy, he was living and working at 13 Sutherland Terrace. Through Leightons social connections the young Italian artist gained access to many of the wealthy patrons in England, enabling him to achieve great financial success. His works were admired and collected by many and he received favorable remarks from the critics. A writer for the Art Journal of 1874 made the following comments about the work he exhibited at the Royal Academy that year: There is much grace showing itself in A Cup of Tea , as well in the carefully drawn figure of a lady who sips the cup of tea as in the general harmony of color secured for the whole composition.

Extractions: FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! In response to my blog about Millais' portrait of Kate Perugini done, unusually, from the back (see Unexpected Angles: A Portrait from the Back ), I've had an email Lucinda Dickens Hawksley (who's written a biography on Perugini*) giving some of the intriguing detail behind the portrait. "Katey (as she was known to her family) and Millais became great friends. He painted her in the Black Brunswicker when she was engaged to his close friend Charles Allston Collins (younger brother of Wilkie Collins) and this second portrait was painted when she had been widowed and was soon to marry the Italian artist Carlo Perugini. According to legend, Katey walked into Millais's studio in the black dress, posed exactly as you see her in the painting, and said: 'This is how I wish to be painted' and he obeyed. "The black dress was ostensibly because she was in mourning for Charlie Collins, but we also know from her letters that she also thought she looked her best in black. Millais took six years to finish the painting; it seems that, because by this time he knew her so well, he felt he wasn't quite capturing her on canvas as she should have been. As an old man when he visited their home (the painting was his present to Carlo Perugini), he would apparently shake his head at it and say: 'It's not you my dear.'"

Extractions: I have found it rather difficult to discover much about Perugini, and, as a result, my initial short biography of him was woefully inadequate. Perugini was a most interesting artist. His paintings were fastidiously painted, highly finished, with subtle integrated colouring, and at their best quite simply wonderful aesthetic pictures. Despite the Italian name, and his birth in Naples, the artist spent the great part of his life in England. His wife, Kate , was the widow of Charles Allston Collins, and the daughter of Charles Dickens. She was the model for the young woman in Millaiss famous painting The Black Brunswicker, and also sat for a rather unconventional portrait by him. Perugini was a protégé of Lord Leighton and very much part of his circle. He did not become even an ARA, and given the standard of his pictures, and his closeness to Leighton and Millais, I find this quite surprising. This obituary of Charles Edward Perugini appeared in The Times on Monday 23 rd December 1918. It does, at least, give some more information about him.
