Extractions: Perspective Drawing Gustave Caillebotte (1848 -1894) Biography Gustave Caillebotte was the artist who created the painting we used as our example on the previous page. Born into a wealthy Parisian family, he trained as a naval architect and engineer, but also studied painting at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. When his father died, his inheritance allowed him to act as a patron and promote the work of the Impressionists. He not only bought and collected their works, but also paid for their framing and gallery space. On his death, he donated his outstanding collection of Impressionist paintings to the French state. It now hangs in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris. Caillebotte was a considerable artist in his own right. Although he exhibited in three of the great Impressionist exhibitions (1879, 1880, 1882) and is normally associated with the Impressionist movement, his style takes a departure from the norm. His subjects are images of contemporary Parisian society, but what makes them different and appealing to the modern eye is their distinctive viewpoints and formally organised compositions. In training as a naval architect, a sense of economy in the construction of space would become instinctive. He applies this economy of design to the architecture of his paintings. He creates a strange fusion of Impressionism with the academic which gives his work its unique character.

Edouard Vuillard 1868-1940 Caillebotte's painting career slowed dramatically in the 1890s, when he stopped making large canvasses and showing his work. He acquired a property at Petit Gennevilliers, on the banks of the Seine near Argenteuil, and moved there permanently in 1888. Caillebotte was not only a painter, but also a racing yachtsman who had a passion for speed and continually seeked to improve his boats. Being a naval architect, he drew and built his own boats in a workshop where he created true thorough-breds of the river, with which he earned many international titles. He contributed to the boat building craft with multiple innovations like silk veil, external ballast, aerodynamic hulls, etc. Also being a highly skilled horticulturist, he devoted himself to gardening and created a large variety of orchids in his greenhouses. During this period, he corresponded with Monet at Giverny and spent much time with his brother, Marital, and his friend Renoir, who often came to stay at Petit Gennevilliers. Caillebotte died of pulmonary congestion, while working in his garden at Petit Gennevilliers in 1894, and was interred in the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.

His paintings are quite realistic, which indicate that the painting is surreal, though it is considered as impressionist. Caillebotte was originally an engineer but he also attended Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. There he met Edgar Degas, Claude Monet and Pierre Auguste Renoir, who are also famous artists. The four of them organized the first impressionist exhibition in 1874, also in Paris. The contents of this painting include four rowers, one that only has the tip of the row shown and another which is barely visible. The foreground is obviously one of the rowers in his canoe. However, his yellow hat seems to be the dominant object in the painting, as the colour is the brightest as well as most vibrant compared to the other objects of the painting. The mid-ground basically consists of... To see the full version of this document, and 137,635 others

Extractions: For a long time, Caillebotte was considered merely a minor talent who deserved to be remembered more for the support he gave to better artists than for his own work. However, the fact that his work is still enjoyed by so many, more than a century after his death, suggests that it deserves to be re-evaluated. Gustave Caillebotte died in Gennevilliers in 1894.
