His paintings are heavily influenced by the French countryside and his absorption of traditional methods of painting helped make Jules Breton one of the primary transmitters of the beauty and idyllic vision of rural existence. Jules Adolphe Aime Louis Breton was born on May 1, 1827 in Courrières , a small Pas-de-Calais village. His father, Marie-Louis Breton, supervised land for a wealthy landowner. His mother died when Jules was 4 and he was brought up by his father. Other family members who lived in the same house were his maternal grandmother and his uncle Boniface Breton. A respect for tradition, a love of the land and for his native region remained central to his art throughout his life and provided the artist with many scenes for his Salon compositions. His first artistic training was not far from Courrières at the College St. Bertin

Er malt die Bürger und Bauern der alten Provinz Artois in ihrer Alltagsbeschäftigung, zumeist in freier Natur; aber diesen einfachen Motiven weiß er durch zarte Beseelung und durch harmonische Verschmelzung der Figuren und der Landschaft einen großen Reiz, bisweilen sogar einen hohen Adel und eine Großartigkeit des Stils zu geben. Sein Kolorit ist stimmungsvoll und kräftig, seine Modellierung scharf und plastisch. Zu voller Anerkennung kam er erst 1857 durch sein Bild: die Segnung der Felder, jetzt im Luxembourg; dort sind auch seine Ährenleserinnen von 1859. In demselben Jahr vollendete er seine Aufpflanzung eines Kalvarienbergs und ein humoristisches Bild: der blaue Montag, Frauen darstellend, die ihre Männer aus der Schenke holen. Im Jahr 1861 stellte er die Unkrautjäterinnen und ein Raps durchsiebendes Mädchen , 1864 die Weinlese und ein weidende Truthennen hütendes Mädchen aus. Sein Hauptwerk ist das Bild von 1865:

Dès son arrivée à Douarnenez, il est émerveillé par les paysages de la baie, par les superbes costumes de fête, par le spectacle étonnant des pardons. Il revient régulièrement en Bretagne et, de l'été à l'automne, séjourne exclusivement dans le port de Douarnenez. La production bretonne de Jules Breton correspond à peu près au tiers de son oeuvre.
