Monday, 3 September 2007 Marcus Lecky Oswald Hornby Birley, club proprietor and businessman: born 29 May 1930; married 1954 Lady Annabel Vane-Tempest-Stewart (one son, one daughter, and one son deceased; marriage dissolved 1975); died London 24 August 2007. At first, Birley had had modest ambitions for his first venture. He had worked in advertising, art-directing the Horlicks account for J. Walter Thompson in the early Fifties, and later for the French luxury-goods maker Hermes, while he and his wife, Lady Annabel Vane-Tempest-Stewart, brought up their young family. In December 1961, he was offered the lease of the basement of 44 Berkeley Square, in Mayfair, by their friend John Aspinall. Upstairs at 44, Aspinall was restoring William Kent's exquisite Palladian interior with the collaboration of the architect Philip Jebb and the decorator John Fowler, making it the setting for the Clermont Club, gaming den for London's high rollers. It was a restoration project that set new standards for post-war London.

Oct 16, 2004 by Nick Foulkes FROM ROBESPIERRE to Beria, history is stuffed with villains. Happily there are heroes to balance them out. Mine tend be those who do their best to counteract the grimness of life, which is what at first drew me to write a biography of the 19th-century uber-dandy, gambler and political fixer Count d'Orsay. As a child, my heroes were people like David Niven, Cary Grant and James Mason (bear in mind I grew up in the Seventies, an era in which the Stranglers declared there were no more heroes any more). I craved elegance as an antidote to the harsher aspects of life. Most Popular Articles

Extractions: But an excessive focus on Chamberlain can be misleading. Appeasement was accepted by the vast majority of those charged with responsibility for British foreign policy throughout the decade and was in no sense invented by one man. It was supported too by leading journalists, academics, and even members of the royal family, such as Edward VIII and his successor, George VI . In short, appeasement was the preferred policy of the establishment of the day. Indeed, it was once popular to suggest that the policy was devised at weekend parties hosted at Cliveden on the Thames by Waldorf Astor, Viscount Astor , and his wife, Nancy Astor . Among those often cited as members of the Cliveden set were J. L. Garvin , editor of The Observer Geoffrey Dawson , editor of The Times Philip Kerr, marquess of Lothian

By Bruce Arnold Saturday January 19 2008 In the early 1970s, I attended what was called an 'Irish Weekend' in Sussex, in the home of Rhoda Birley, widow of the English portrait painter, Sir Oswald Birley. Lady Birley, the daughter of Robert Lecky Pike, of Kilnock, Tullow, Co Carlow, was passionately interested in Irish culture and held her summer festivals for a period of about 12 years, bringing people from everywhere to debate art and literature. On this occasion she had assembled Cyril Connolly, Elizabeth Bowen, Patrick Synge who was the cousin of the playwright, and a great gardener Con Howard and Garech Browne. She had tried to get Micheal Mac Liammoir but he was having a cataract operation. On the whole they were a recalcitrant bunch. There was not much about the Irish Revival, in which few of them believed. They were more interested in creative figures such as George Moore, Somerville and Ross and Paddy Kavanagh, who were rebels, really. This was reflected in what was said during the big event of the weekend, which was known as the 'Long Table Irish Talk'.
