Extractions: Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was one of the finest and most distinctive of the Victorian painters. Dutch born, he moved to Belgium and than to London in 1870. He was a classical-subject painter and became famous for his depictions of the luxury and decadence of the Roman Empire, with languorous figures set in fabulous marbled interiors or against a backdrop of dazzling blue Mediterranean Sea and sky. At the age of fifteen he was diagnosed as consumptive, so he has been left to himself to decide to pursue a career as an artist. In 1852 he entered The Royal Academy of Antwerp where he studied early Dutch and Flemish art. He assisted the professor Louis Jan de Taeye, where he was influenced by history and historical costume and was encouraged to depict historic accuracy in his paintings, a trait for which the artist became known. In his early career Alma-Tadema portrayed Merovingian subjects. Under the guidance of Baron Jan August Hendrik Leys in Belgium, Alma-Tadema painted his first major work: The Education of the children of Clovis (1861) which created a sensation among critics and artists. It has laid the foundation of his fame and reputation. That piece was honorably given to King Leopold of Belgium. Merovingian themes were the painter's favorite subject up to the mid-1860. Merovingian subjects did not have a wide international appeal, so he switched to themes of life in ancient Egypt that were more popular. He spent great energy and much research in this and in 1862 he started his own career. On his first visit to Italy, Alma-Tadema developed his interest in depicting the life of ancient Greece and Rome, which fascinated him and would inspire much of his work in the coming decades.

Extractions: 1. The artist was born in 1836 in the Netherlands as just Laurens Tadema. Years later, he changed his first name Lawrence to be more English, and added Alma to his last name so he would appear first (or at least at the beginning) in exhibition catalogues. 2. Originally, Tadema was supposed to become a lawyer, although he had received drawing lessons from a young age. After a physical and mental breakdown at age 15, he was diagnosed as consumptive, with only a short time to live. He spent his days drawing and painting, eventually regaining his health, pursuing a career as an artist, and living to the ripe old age of 76. 3. Tadema wasnât always known as the âmarbelous painterâ for his realistic marble textures. His mentor in 1861, Baron Jan Leys, criticized the marble in Tademaâs first exhibited work, âThe Education of the Children of Clovis,â comparing it to cheese. A perfectionist, Tadema took the criticism to heart and worked to improve his technique, becoming the foremost painter of marble. 4. At the turn-of-the-century, Tadema forayed into theater design (including costumes) and furniture design (often Pompeian- and Egyptian-inspired). Often, he incorporated furniture of his design into his paintings; the clothing on some of the female subjects is also likely to have been of his own design.

Extractions: Accession Number LL3130 Alma-Tadema was born in Holland but settled in London, where he achieved great success with his scenes of daily life in ancient times. The tepidarium was the warm Roman bath. This painting shows a girl holding an ostrich feather and a strigel used for scraping the skin after soaping and oiling it. Alma-Tadema generally contrasted archaeologically accurate detail with aggressively modern figures and attitudes. He was also the most gifted exponent among Victorian painters in rendering exactly textures, surfaces and colours. This combination of learning and realism proved very disconcerting when applied to the nude. It is surprising that A and F Pears, who owned this work before Leverhulme purchased it in 1916, could ever have considered using it in a soap advertisement, however appropriate for the purpose it may be.
