Earnings from farm exports are forecast to fall by 2.5% to A$27.2 billion in 2005/06, following an expected rise of 7% to A$27.9 billion in 2004/05. Agricultural commodities for which export earnings are forecast to fall in 2005/06 include wheat, wool, beef and dairy products. EUROPE 0ne of Lithuania's biggest dairy companies, Pieno Zvaigzdes, is counting on a blend of tradition and high-tech to help make it a major player in the EU, which the Baltic state joined in 2004. In the past three years, Pieno Zvaigzdes has invested €50 million installing new technology in its four factories around Lithuania. The emphasis on high-tech is aimed at producing quality product for export.

NORTH ASIA China’s imports of fruits and vegetables from Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries rose 41% over 2004, an increase credited to last year’s launch of the China–ASEAN early harvest programme (EHP). China’s ASEAN agricultural exports actually fell 9.8% over the year, to US$2.12 billion in 2004, while ASEAN imports hit $3.72 billion. The gap would likely be made up by July or August this year. Under EHP, China first agreed to allow ASEAN members to taste ‘early harvest’ by reducing tariffs on some 560 agricultural imports from ASEAN from the beginning of last year. Tariffs on all 560 items would be removed by 2006.

Veganic food systems aim to encourage further innovation. A vegan is one who chooses a diet and lifestyle free of animal products, and who does not support businesses that exploit animals. No meat, fish, chicken, fowl, eggs, milk, cheese, ice cream, yogurt, gelatin, honey, whey, wool, silk, leather or other animal derivatives. Think of any aspect of life that uses animals and the vegan is seeking a way to avoid that exploitation. Some do so for health reasons, others due to concerns over the environment, while still others ponder how our inhumanity to animals affects us spiritually and emotionally. There are vegans for social justice reasons and also to equalize global resource allocation. Organic agriculture was the norm from the beginning of time until World War II, when "The Green Revolution" ushered in the era of chemical fertilizers. Modern organics has been identified as "alternative", something done by "hippies." And yet, our grandparents recognize these concepts as traditional, albeit now with the benefits of scientific research to support them. Veganic agriculture is a growing body of knowledge and gardening practice which seeks to replace all the animal inputs which currently exist. In compost, the Vegan, who eats no eggs, would add no egg shells. Similarly Veganic gardening avoids the use of blood and bone meal, and manures because of their origins. Veganic gardeners are finding increasing success using no manures.

Genetically modified feed also can improve water and soil quality by reducing levels of phosphorous and nitrogen in animal waste. Over the past 20 years, biotechnology has lead to the development of new processes and products that have benefited agriculture and society. Between 1996 and 2002 there was a 35-fold increase in acreage planted globally with genetically modified (GM) crops, from 1.7 to 58.1 million hectares, and more than a quarter of GM crops are grown in developing countries. While there has been considerable discussion about the benefits of GM crops in the grains and fruits humans consume, less public debate has been forthcoming about GM crops' profound effects on improving the health of livestock grown for meat products and on reducing some of the environmental costs of livestock wastes. Adoption of products produced by modern biotechnology will be important to enable the production of food sufficient to feed a growing world population.

Problems in North Carolina associated with confined pork production facilities and degradation of streams adjacent to these facilities seems to have affected the perception of agriculture across the Southeast if not the entire nation. The Clinton Administration's 1998 Clean Water Initiative and recent South Carolina law requires revision and increased enforcement of effluent guidelines and rules for all animal feeding operations, in part because of the perception that these operations contribute significantly to non-point source pollution. Because of these and numerous other reasons, the authors wished to determine if animal feeding operations contribute significantly to the non-point source pollution problem in South Carolina. This component of the overall agricultural perceptions study attempted to determine whether or not spatial relationships existed between areas of the state where large numbers of agricultural animals are concentrated and water quality by watersheds. The authors also examined the human population in the same context. The study area was limited primarily to the state of South Carolina, though some of the watersheds analyzed crossed political boundaries into North Carolina and Georgia.
